Laos Lottery – Is the Lao Lottery Really Random?

laos lotto

Laos Lottery is a beloved tradition in Laos that allows its participants to test their luck at winning prizes based on numbers drawn from a ball. Although many see it as gambling, Laos Lottery is actually state-run and legal under current laws; held every Wednesday livestreamed on Facebook and TV for thousands to witness; however suspicions have emerged that the lottery may not be as random as advertised; one example being three consecutive drawings at the end of September which produced number 67 which is widely believed to bring bad fortune in Laos.

Lao players began questioning the fairness and randomness of the lottery, with several concerns raised regarding its rules and procedures – specifically how balls are selected or what becomes of tickets not selected – raised. Vilasack Phommaluck, a Finance Ministry official serving on the committee overseeing it told RFA that certain changes had already been implemented to address these concerns, such as moving drawing dates back to once every week; results would also now be made public in order to prevent speculation on winning numbers.

As part of efforts to restore faith in the lottery, further steps were being considered, such as cutting back on games to control revenue and blocking certain numbers from sale or outright prohibiting their sale altogether. He further revealed that a committee had double-checked weight of lottery balls to make sure they are unrigged.

Congratulations to those who have had success. Mr Thongdy celebrated winning 1.2 billion kip after purchasing an Insee six-digit ticket for 1,000 kip; she credits her success to hard work. Meanwhile, Phonxay Chanthavong from Vangvieng District in Vientiane Province won 6 billion kip through Sibsonglasy lottery – she said she could never have imagined such an enormous prize would ever come her way!

Illicit lottery operatorss are taking advantage of Laos’s growing interest in lottery by offering four daily draws with lucky draws at each. The Finance Ministry has instructed relevant sectors to take swift and decisive action against unlawful operations, setting up an automated tracking system. Furthermore, the ministry plans on increasing transparency by publicly announcing lottery results publicly or airing them via TV broadcast. This will boost confidence in the lottery and encourage more people to play. At present, only around 20 percent of people play legal lottery in their nation while others prefer purchasing illegal tickets from private individuals; it is important not to fall for deceptive tactics used by unregulated operators as many may be fake. There have also been reports of illegal online sellers that harm industry.
