Lotteries are games of chance in which players pay an entry fee to win a prize, often in the form of money. They may also offer chances to win a prize that does not have a cash value, such as goods or services. While the majority of lotteries are government-sponsored, some private organizations run their own. Some countries have national lotteries, while others have state or provincial lotteries. Regardless of the structure, many of these lottery games have become highly popular.

Canada, for example, has four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. In addition, the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation administers several regional lotteries, including Atlantic Lottery (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut), and British Columbia Lottery and Gaming Corporation (British Columbia).

In communist Laos, where gambling is illegal, local officials manipulate the nation’s legal state lottery by rigging winning numbers, sources in the country tell RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings of the national lottery held three times a week often show numbers that disappear from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky and not likely to be selected, the sources say. Moreover, the company that runs the state lottery pays no taxes and is managed by people with family connections to members of the ruling elite.

The largest national lotteries in Europe include EuroMillions, the Irish Lottery, and the Spanish Christmas Lottery. The latter is the world’s second-largest lottery, with a top prize of EUR2.4 billion. The prize pool of the UK National Lottery is smaller but still significant.

In the United States, state-sponsored lotteries offer a variety of games, including instant lottery tickets and Keno. In addition, some jurisdictions offer video lottery terminals (slot machines in all but name). In 2010, a company called GTech Corporation administered 70% of the world’s online instant lottery business. Its software is used in over 70 jurisdictions, including the US. Its software is also the basis for a number of other lottery-style games, such as esports and fantasy sports. These games can be played for free or through premiums, which are charged in exchange for ad views and other services. The company is also experimenting with virtual reality games, which promise to transform the way we play lottery games. Currently, these types of games are being tested by a consortium led by Harvard University. If the experiments prove successful, they could be widely adopted worldwide.
