Laos’ state-run lottery is notorious for rigging the results, sources in the communist nation say. Drawings of the national lottery, which take place three times a week, frequently show numbers that vanish from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky. For example, on Oct. 14, the winning number 509 mysteriously disappeared from bought tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing, a source told RFA’s Lao service. The government has taken steps to address the issue. On Aug. 17, prime minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive requesting the ministry that oversees the state lottery to work with the ministry of public security to make the system more transparent.
