Laos officials accused of rigging national lottery
In the communist nation of Laos, state-owned companies operate the country’s legal state lottery but have been accused of rigged drawing results. During a recent drawing, for example, the number 509 appeared only as five on purchased tickets throughout the day of the drawing, sources told RFA’s Lao Service. The number is believed to be associated with the buffalo, which is considered a symbol of good luck in Laos. The number also popped up several times during previous drawings. In an attempt to avoid a public backlash, the prime minister’s office sent a directive on Aug. 17 asking the ministry that oversees the lottery to work with the police to better manage the problem, the sources said.
