Laos State Lottery is Rigged
The state-run lottery in the communist nation of Laos is rigged, and winners are often left without large pay-outs, sources tell RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings for the national lottery, held three times a week, frequently show numbers that disappear from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky. For instance, on Oct. 14 this year, the winning number 509 vanished from purchased tickets throughout the day of the drawing before finally appearing as a five in the final results.
Lao state officials have a financial interest in the lottery, and the companies responsible for its operation include members of the ruling elite. They are not transparent about their business dealings, and the public is unaware of how much they pay the government for an annual license to operate the lottery.
