Lottery Online in Canada

Lottery online is booming, with some companies offering multiple lucky draws a day. This is an illegal practice and the ministry is stepping up efforts to control it. Some of these websites charge premiums on base lottery prices to lure people into habitual betting, a ministry official said. It is important to be aware of the risks and play responsibly.

Lotteries in Canada are controlled by the federal government and the provincial/territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut), and British Columbia Lottery Corporation (British Columbia). The National Lottery is the main source of revenue for all four lottery corporations.

In addition to the aforementioned lottery games, the Canadian government also regulates sports leagues and horse races through the provinces and territories. The government’s lottery profits are used to support a variety of public programs and services, including the health, education, social, and cultural sectors, as well as to fund a percentage of the federal budget.

Players should fill out their name, address and phone number on the back of their ticket to file a prize claim. They must also present a valid ID or driver’s license when they submit their prize claim form. If they are unable to produce an identification document, their winnings will be forfeited. Those who win multiple prizes must collect them within six months or one year after the drawing.

Those who have not collected their winnings after one year may request a refund. The unused portion of the prize is then available to other winners. The amount of money received depends on the type of game and the odds of winning, but most prizes are less than a million dollars.

A Lao woman who won the lottery recently told RFA that she would share her windfall with her family, but she also wants to use some of it to travel. She said her phone has been ringing nonstop since she learned she was the winner, and she hopes to visit South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and other places in the future.

The lottery has long been a part of the culture in Laos. However, questions about the honesty of the national lottery have arisen as the feline numbers—which represent Laos’ culture—have come up in the draw four times in a row, sparking accusations that the numbers are being manipulated. A local lottery salesman who spoke on condition of anonymity told RFA that the company that runs the lottery knows the numbers that people choose and can manipulate the results. Nonetheless, he says the steering committee of the lottery has no control over this behavior. The company is based in Thailand and is owned by the Insee Trading Company, which also has ties to the country’s ruling elite. It is not known how much these business interests pay the lottery’s operating costs each year.
