Esiimsi or siam si is a form of divination where fortunes can be read by shaking a cup containing bamboo sticks marked with numbers. Once read, those numbers serve as their final three digits on their lotto ticket. People might consult the holy water basin of Sawang Arom Temple to predict their fortune. Both institutions believe numbers represent good luck and protection; however, according to research by Thammasat University statistics expert Assoc. Prof. Ningthit Pongphan. Prof. Wararit Panichkitkosolkul has revealed that chances of winning a 2,000 baht prize in the government lottery are extremely slim; an individual would need to purchase tickets for years in order to have any chance at hitting first prize bonus, leading one to question its promotion by authorities.
