All are overseen by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a group of five regional lotteries owned by their provincial or territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut).
In the communist country of Laos, officials in charge of the national lottery are accused of rigging drawings in order to avoid large pay-outs. On Aug. 17, the office of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith issued a directive requiring the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the lottery system, to reduce the number of drawing times from two to one per week and make sure that lottery winnings are handled in a more transparent manner. The directive also requires that informal football lotteries and lottery chances purchased via short messaging service be shut down.
