Lotteries are a popular form of gambling that can be played online. They involve drawing numbers to win a prize, typically cash or goods. New Zealand operates its national lottery through an autonomous Crown entity, Lotto New Zealand (formally the New Zealand Lottery Commission). The proceeds of the Lottery are distributed by the Lottery Grants Board to charitable and community organizations. Lottery games include the Lotto (including Powerball and Strike), Keno, Bullseye, and Instant Kiwi scratch card games. Lottery winnings are not taxed in New Zealand.
The European Lottery is Europe’s biggest and most prestigious lottery, with an average jackpot of EUR2.4 billion each draw. It is operated by the Camelot Group and is open to residents of all EU member states. The European Lottery is the only multi-national lottery with a single draw and a single prize pool.
Those in the know accuse lottery officials of rigging the system, manipulating winning numbers to avoid large pay-outs. In one example, a number that had been shown as the winner of a national lottery drawing in October this year—509—appeared only as a 5 on tickets sold throughout the day before the drawing, an RFA source told the program.
Laos’ deputy finance minister and state lottery supervisor, Sila Viengkeo, dismissed the accusations as unfounded. In a written statement to RFA, she noted that the committee responsible for overseeing the lottery has double checked the weight of all balls used in each drawing.
