On Aug. 17, the office of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive to the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the country’s legal state lottery system, asking it to work with police to better manage the issue of illegal gambling, sources told RFA’s Lao Service. According to the directive, drawings will be reduced from two to one a week and winnings handled in a more transparent manner. In addition, lottery chances purchased via short messaging services will be closed down. The directive did not mention whether it would be enforced.
