Drawings for the national lottery, held three times a week, often show numbers that don’t appear on tickets purchased throughout the day. One such example occurred on Oct. 14 this year, when the number 509 appeared only as 5 on ticket purchases throughout the day of the drawing.
A caller to RFA’s Lao Service told us that business interests with a stake in the national lottery also control other government entities and have close connections to the ruling elite. “The government should resume responsibility for the lottery,” he said, “because private business interests shouldn’t be responsible.”
