Lao officials are rigging the country’s state-run lottery system in order to avoid large pay-outs, sources tell RFA’s Lao service. The legal status of gambling in Laos is a little complicated. While it is considered to be illegal in the country, there are a few Special Economic Zones that allow casinos to operate. These zones are leased out by the government to boost foreign trade. There are currently three land-based casinos in the country. However, Laos citizens can gamble online at numerous offshore casinos without fear of being caught. In addition, players can also buy lottery tickets at local convenience stores. This is a convenient option for those who cannot afford to travel far to purchase tickets.
