In Laos, the state-run state lottery is the only legal lottery in the country. Amid growing concerns, the country’s prime minister issued a directive on Aug. 17 requiring the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the state lottery, to work with the Ministry of Public Security to improve transparency. The directive calls for the drawing of the state lottery to be reduced from two to one a week and for winnings to be handled more transparently. It also prohibits informal football lotteries and lottery chances sold through mobile phone messaging services.
