Lottery online is a popular way to play lottery games without having to leave the comfort of your home. Lottery games are available on the Internet from several companies, with many offering instant-win scratch-off tickets and keno. Some of these websites offer free instant games, while others charge a premium for their services. Players should always check the legality of these sites before playing. Some jurisdictions have banned the use of these websites.

In the United States, state governments oversee lotteries. Private lotteries are also legal, with a number of US patents awarded for new types of lottery games. These include scratch-off tickets, keno and video lottery terminals (slot machines in all but name). Lottery revenues have risen substantially since the 1970s, and they are now a major source of state government revenue.

Some people use the Internet to gamble on the results of the lottery, even though it is illegal in some jurisdictions. While some of these sites may be reputable, there are also many that are unlicensed and operate illegally. The most reputable sites are licensed by state gaming commissions and have high payout limits. They must also adhere to strict security standards.

Many poor Vietnamese families rely on selling lottery tickets for their income, because the social security system of the country is not yet able to handle so many of its needy citizens. For example, a single mother who sells lottery tickets in the city of Saigon can make about 230 000 VN-Dong per day. This is a much better income than the one she could expect to receive from begging.

The most popular lottery game in the world is the National Lottery, which is run by the UK Government and operated by Camelot Group. The National Lottery has raised more than £46 billion to date, and is used to fund projects across the UK.

A number of international lotteries operate in addition to the national lotteries. Bulgaria operates the state lottery, Blgarski sporten totalizator (Bulgarian: лgarski sporten totalizator). The Isle of Man has a small private lottery called Teleloto, which offers the National Lottery. Canada operates four nationwide lotteries, including Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand and Millionaire Life. These are administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a consortium of five regional lottery commissions: Atlantic Lottery and Gaming Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Quebecor-Méga-Gaming (Quebec) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon and Northwest Territories).

The first official Internet lottery was launched in 1995 by GTech Corporation, which now administers 70% of the worldwide online and instant lottery business. Since then, a large number of Web sites have sprung up that allow users to purchase a ticket and view the winning numbers from the most recent drawing in a variety of different ways.
