Canada: In 1967 Montreal mayor Jean Drapeau introduced a “voluntary tax” that would give players the opportunity to win silver bars for a $2.00 donation. The Canadian Supreme Court ruled that the tax was not legal. In addition, Quebec’s government had already banned lotteries in 1915.
Australia: Australians are familiar with the state-controlled lottery, but the country has a variety of privately owned lotteries as well. Some are online, and most have different games to choose from. The country also has a national sports lottery, where players can compete to win sporting goods and travel packages.
Liechtenstein: Lottery games are not regulated in Liechtenstein, but private companies operate a wide range of online and offline games. In addition, the state-controlled charitable foundation, International Lottery Foundation (ILLF), runs a series of Internet lottery sites. The ILLF pioneered Internet gambling and has since expanded its operations to include games such as keno, baccarat, and casino-style games.
