Lottery online is a type of Internet gambling that allows people to play lottery games over the World Wide Web, often for free or with a small premium added on top of the base lottery price. These sites can be found in almost every country where Internet access is available, including the United States. In many cases, the site operators are state-licensed or privately owned, and may also promote the sale of official lotteries in addition to their own offerings. The popularity of the Internet has led to increased competition between lottery companies and has contributed to the growth of the industry.

Various governments have introduced lotteries to raise money for a variety of different reasons. For example, some governments have used lottery revenue to fund public education systems, while others use it for social welfare programs. Some countries even have national lotteries that are overseen by a central government body. In the United States, for example, state-licensed lottery operators run a number of major games, including traditional scratch-off tickets, instant tickets, and keno.

In Canada, for example, a provincial government-owned corporation operates the Lottery Corporation of Ontario and the Lotto Max. Other provincial/territorial organizations oversee regional lotteries. In addition, an interprovincial lottery organization (GTech Canada) has developed a range of Internet-based games. These include the Internet Lottery, which has been operating since 1995 and was a pioneer of Internet gaming.

Despite the legality of online gambling, some of these services fall outside of state and federal jurisdictions because gambling laws have not kept pace with the Internet’s rapid growth. As a result, the legitimacy of these operations is uncertain. The proliferation of these types of services has prompted the federal government to consider new legislation.

For poor Vietnamese people like Huong and her husband, selling lottery tickets is the only way they can make a living. They start their day by making a small breakfast of rice and vegetable soup before going out on the streets of Saigon to sell tickets for about 16 hours. On good days they sell more than 250 tickets; on bad days, less. Then they return home for lunch and a few hours of relaxation before going back out again.

For Huong, who has been selling tickets for more than a decade, the lottery is her only source of income. But despite the success of her business, she still doesn’t have enough money to support her family. Her husband has to work a day job in a neighboring province to provide for them, but he cannot afford to leave the children behind when they go out. He dreams of being able to buy enough tickets to one day retire and live with her in their home village. RFA’s Lao Service contacted Huong and her husband for this story. They spoke to RFA on condition of anonymity. For more information, listen to the full interview at this link.
