The first official lotteries were introduced in France in the early 19th century. The game became a major source of state income in the 1970s, with instant scratch cards becoming a staple of lottery sales. Some jurisdictions have even expanded their lotteries to include keno and video lottery terminals.

This is just enough to keep her and her infant daughter alive.
