Lotteries are state-sponsored games of chance wherein participants may win cash or goods. They are a popular way to raise money for public projects. In some countries, such as the United States, a portion of lottery proceeds are used to fund public education systems. In other countries, such as Canada, a percentage of the total prize pool is set aside to support local charities. Some states also run their own state-sponsored lotteries, while others partner with private companies to offer multistate games such as Powerball and EuroMillions.

The first modern state-run lotteries in Europe were founded in the 17th century. These included the French loterie, operated by the Paris municipal government, and the Dutch Staatsloterij. These were followed in the 18th century by state-controlled national lotteries, such as the Austrian Lottery and the German Staatliche Staatslotterie (German: Bundeslotterie), both of which remain popular today. In the United States, the first modern state-run lotteries were established in the 19th century, such as the New Jersey Lottery and the Pennsylvania State Lottery.

Nowadays, the Internet has enabled people to play a variety of online lottery-style games for free. These games are often referred to as instant or scratch-off games, and they generally pay out small amounts of winnings. These types of games have become increasingly popular, and GTech Corporation, a company that manufactures lottery machines, is estimated to administer about 70% of the worldwide online instant and scratch-off business.

Despite their popularity, lottery-style games have some significant drawbacks. In addition to being potentially addictive, they can be very expensive for players and are susceptible to fraudulent activities. For these reasons, many people who want to play these games should consult a licensed professional before they start playing.

A number of states prohibit gambling, but some allow it in special economic zones. These areas are usually leased by the government to boost foreign trade, and they offer various casino services. In Laos, for example, gambling is illegal but three casinos are operating legally within the country. Moreover, many online casinos accept players from Laos and provide them with a wide range of popular casino games.

For Huong, a single mother from Vietnam, selling lottery tickets is her only source of income. On good days, she can sell 250 tickets and make a daily profit of about 11 US-Dollars. Her husband, Manh, accompanies her during the 16-hour shift.

Lotteries in Canada are operated by provincial/territorial governments or Crown entities, and are regulated by the Lottery and Gaming Authority of each jurisdiction. The Canadian provinces/territories run their own lottery games, including the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta), and British Columbia Lottery Corporation (British Columbia). Each provincial/territorial lottery operator offers different types of lottery games.
