What is Thai Lotto?

Thailand is home to more than 19 million Thais who play the lottery each month, and brings in four billion baht in annual revenues from this legal form of gambling – making this form of revenue generation one of the nation’s more reliable ways of making a living and providing much-needed financial relief in rural areas where other income sources might prove limited.

Thai lotto offers individuals an opportunity to win huge cash, goods or service prizes. Unlike other forms of gambling which often entail playing random games of chance, lottery is based on fixed odds distribution; therefore if someone wishes to win they must select correct numbers; chances of success depend on both how many numbers were selected in a draw and the total sum awarded per category.

There are two kinds of Thai lotto tickets, the Government Lottery and Thai Charity Lottery. Both can be easily identified by their names printed at the top left of each ticket; their main differences being first prize payouts and tax payable upon winnings. Individuals can redeem winnings at either location; however if your prize exceeds 20,000THB it must be claimed personally at one of them.

Thais tend to be superstitious about certain numbers, believing they hold special meaning for good fortune. Therefore, locals frequently scour license plate numbers of crashed vehicles or highway numbers where accidents have taken place in hopes of finding an auspicious number that will bring good fortune – such superstitions have even led one man in Chiang Mai to commit suicide after failing to win lottery prizes from lottery tickets purchased earlier that month.

Thais also look for signs of good fortune in animals and natural phenomena besides numbers, such as banana trees in Sakon Nakhon that had a flower that looked similar to that of Naga – the mythical serpent who lives under its branches – or temples with water basins where locals believe luck can come their way when playing the lottery. Of course, luck ultimately lies with each individual.
