A New Zealand lottery player won $1.3 billion in the Powerball drawing on March 27. The winner, a 52-year-old Lao man living in the Portland area, said he plans to take half of the jackpot and share the other half with a friend who chipped in $100 to buy a batch of tickets for the couple.
The winner purchased the winning ticket at a Plaid Pantry convenience store in Portland. He says the ticket is worth $422 million after taxes. The winner, whose name is not being released until after the lottery has gone through a security and vetting process, is an immigrant who works for an airline.

Officials in the communist nation of Laos are rigging the national lottery, manipulating results to avoid paying out large pay-outs, sources in Vientiane tell RFA’s Lao Service. The country’s legal state lottery is held twice each week, but the numbers are sometimes mysteriously removed from tickets sold before the drawings. In one case, the winning number 509 appeared only as a 5 on tickets sold throughout the day of an Oct. 14 drawing, after a number of buyers sought to buy tickets with the lucky number.
