Lottery Online
Lotteries are public games of chance in which people have the opportunity to win a prize based on the number or symbols printed on a ticket. In the United States, lotteries are usually regulated by state laws, and winnings may be subject to federal income tax. In addition, lottery profits are often used to fund public education systems. Lottery games are also popular in Canada and Australia, where they are administered by regional lottery commissions. The Canadian provinces and territories operate a total of four nationwide lotteries: the Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. These lotteries are governed by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a consortium of five regional lottery corporations owned by their respective provincial/territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Québec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories).
The Lao government says it is taking steps to tackle illegal online gambling. But the problem is complex, because it involves a multitude of websites that offer various casino and lottery-style games, some of which are not regulated or even legal in some jurisdictions. Moreover, many of these illegal sites are marketed as lotteries, although the winning numbers shown on the website are often different from those in the actual lotteries. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance said that the government is working with the Internet Service Providers Association to identify those responsible and take action.
However, he added that the ministry is unable to stop players from playing at these unregulated sites because of their easy access from abroad. He urged authorities to invest in a system that can track those who are using the services of these illegal websites.
In the meantime, the ministry is reducing the number of national lotteries to three per week and ending the scratchcard lottery. It is also reducing the prizes to encourage more people to participate in the draw, he added. The minister said the government is concerned about the growing number of people addicted to gambling and believes that more needs to be done to address the issue.
