Officials in the communist country of Laos are rigging the national lottery, manipulating results to avoid large pay-outs, sources in Vientiane tell RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings for the nationwide lottery, which are held three times a week, often show numbers that disappear from purchased tickets or that are considered unlucky, sources say. For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the winning number in a drawing was announced as 509, but it was changed to 662 only 10 minutes before the drawing began, a source told RFA. The source added that the business interests responsible for running the national lottery include family members of the nation’s ruling elite. Those with stakes in the business have reportedly made payments to national leaders. The government should resume control of the lottery and stop allowing private business interests to run it, he said.
