How Thais Win the Lottery

How Thais Win the Lottery

Thais take the lottery very seriously, and many come up with eccentric methods of trying to boost their luck through superstitions such as praying to trees with similar characteristics, observing animal behavior or dream interpretation, collecting license plate numbers from people who have survived accidents (or were involved), or collecting license plate numbers of those involved in fatal car accidents as a means of choosing their winning lottery number. You might be amazed at all the ways Thais come up with to pick their lucky lottery number!

Thai lotto is one of two legal forms of gambling in Thailand and is played by over 19 million Thais, or 28.6% of its population. This can be attributed to its affordability for those living on tight budgets – hence street vendors selling tickets from their bikes as they pass.

However, while Thai lotto gambling may be affordable and accessible to many people, its risks and consequences should not be overlooked. According to research conducted by the Center for Gambling Studies, Thai lotto was responsible for more than $3.5 billion in debt and financial issues in 2013. This can be partly attributed to prize money going straight into prize pools instead of state revenue sources (about 28% is put towards state coffers).

Thai lotto gambling poses not only the risk of financial loss but is also seen as an addictive and harmful form of gambling, particularly among youths and children. A recent survey conducted by the Center for Gambling Studies discovered that more than 702,400 Thais aged 20 or under purchase government lottery tickets even though this practice is forbidden by law.

Though Thai lotto may not pose as much of a threat as other forms of gambling such as sports and casino betting, young Thais should still understand its risks and how to prevent themselves from becoming addicted. Furthermore, children could benefit from learning statistical mathematics – this will enable them to develop realistic perspectives when making decisions that may go against their best interests such as when participating in Thai lotto.

Foreigners interested in playing the Thai Lotto should know that foreigners are allowed to purchase lottery tickets. While some may see this as evidence of racism or xenophobia, this actually serves a greater good by encouraging more people to participate and competing against locals on an equal playing field. Plus, having foreigners buying lottery tickets before deadline might just bring luck! Good luck and let us hope for an amazingly lucky draw!
