Lottery officials in the communist nation of Laos are rigging the system and manipulating drawing results to avoid large pay-outs, according to sources in the country. In recent months, winning numbers in state lottery drawings have allegedly vanished from purchased tickets or have been deemed unlucky and removed from available options. In one case on Oct. 14, the number 509 mysteriously disappeared from purchased tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing, a Lao resident told RFA’s Lao Service. Private business interests that oversee the lottery reportedly include members of the ruling elite.
