Lotteries are popular in many countries around the world. They can be operated by state or private companies and provide a good source of revenue for local governments. They can be simple, such as a scratch-off ticket, or complex, such as an instantaneous game that allows players to select numbers at random. Some countries have national lotteries that offer large prizes to a limited number of winners, while others have state-run lotteries with smaller prizes but larger jackpots.

New Zealand has four nationwide lotteries: Lotto, Keno, Bullseye and Instant Kiwi. Lottery profits are distributed by the Lottery Grants Board to community groups and charities, sport and recreation organisations, creative organisations, and schools. The board also supports national organizations, such as the Arts Council of New Zealand and Sport NZ.

The legality of Internet-based lotteries is a controversial issue. Some states have banned them, while others have passed laws regulating them. Some companies, such as the Rhode Island-based GTech Corporation, are attempting to increase the popularity of these games by allowing people to purchase tickets through their websites for more than the base price of the lottery. Others, such as Lottoland, are attempting to establish a reputation for fairness by providing free games and offering prizes to certain winners.

In the United States, lotteries are regulated by state governments, although they may be administered by private companies or nonprofit organizations. The largest US lotteries are run by the Florida Lottery, the Virginia Lottery and the Illinois State Lottery.

In Laos, officials are rigging the nation’s legal state lottery, sources in the Southeast Asian country tell RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings are often rigged to avoid large pay-outs, and winning numbers can disappear from purchased tickets. For example, the Oct. 14 winning number 509 disappeared from purchased tickets after many buyers sought to buy tickets that included the number, which is associated with buffalo, a symbol of good luck in Laos. Access to the number was later restored, only to be changed again a few hours before the drawing.
