Officials in communist Laos are rigging the country’s national lottery, manipulating winning numbers to avoid large pay-outs, sources told RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings often show numbers that vanish from the purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky. For example, the winning number on Oct. 14 appeared only as 134 on tickets sold throughout the day, but radio announcements of the results were suddenly changed to read 662 just an hour before the drawing took place.
