How to Play the Lottery Online in Laos and Canada

A lottery is a game where numbers are drawn in a random drawing to determine a winner or winners. The term lottery is also used for games of chance such as bingo, keno, or video lottery terminals (slot machines in all but name). In the United States, a variety of lotteries are operated by state governments and private organizations. Lotteries are a significant source of revenue for many governments, and the profits from them are often used to fund public programs.

In Laos, the government-run National Lottery operates a multi-tiered prize structure that encourages participation. The prizes increase exponentially with the number of matching digits. For instance, a winning ticket that matches all four numbers could turn a $1,000 wager into 6 million kip. Matching just three numbers would earn a 500,000 kip prize, while matching two numbers would net a 100,000 kip prize.

The Laos National Lottery’s results are broadcast live, and participants cross-reference their tickets with the official results. The drawing, held three times a week, keeps players on the edge of their seats, and is widely considered one of the most entertaining games in the country. However, there are some allegations that the lottery is rigged. According to RFA’s Lao Service, government officials are attempting to limit large payouts by rigging the drawing. Lottery results frequently show that certain numbers disappear from purchased tickets, or are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be chosen. For example, on Oct. 14, the winning number 509 appeared only as a five on tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing.

In Canada, provincial and territorial governments run their own lotteries. For example, the Atlantic Lottery Corporation serves New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador; Loto-Quebec runs Quebec; and Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation oversees the province of Ontario and the territories of Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. In addition to these provincial and territorial lotteries, the Canadian Lottery Corporation runs the nation’s four nationwide lottery games: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. The Canadian Lottery Corporation is a consortium of five regional lottery commissions owned by their respective provincial and territorial governments.
