Lottery officials in the communist nation of Laos are rigging the national lottery to avoid large pay-outs and keep profits high, sources in the country tell RFA’s Lao Service. The numbers in the daily drawings are frequently manipulated, sources say. For example, the number 509 in October’s drawing appeared only as a five on tickets purchased throughout the day of the drawing, but suddenly changed to 134 shortly before the drawing. This is to discourage people from picking the number, which is associated with the buffalo, a symbol of good luck, a source told RFA.
