Officials in the communist country of Laos are rigging the nation’s national lottery, sources tell RFA’s Lao Service. The winning numbers are often manipulated in order to avoid large pay-outs, the sources say. For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the lottery drawing showed a winner of $1 billion with the number 509. But the winning number was only 5 on purchased tickets throughout the day of the draw. The number was then changed only 10 minutes before the drawing to the supposedly unlucky number 9, the source said. The same source added that private business interests are influencing the results of the lottery.
