Lotteries are a popular form of gambling. Usually operated by governments and privately owned, they offer a range of prizes. In Laos, a national lottery is conducted by the state-owned company Hanoi Lotto. The prize money for the main lottery is a minimum of 10 million kip ($3,400). In addition, there are several regional lotteries in the country and other forms of gambling such as roulette and poker.
Laos is one of the world’s poorest nations, and it’s not surprising that many people would try to win a big jackpot through the lottery. However, the authorities in the communist country have been accused of rigging the lottery system to avoid paying out large jackpots. Among the accusations is that lottery officials are manipulating the drawings by deleting numbers that are supposed to be lucky. For example, in the October 14 drawing, number 509 appeared only on purchased tickets before disappearing completely from the lottery website 10 minutes before the draw, a source told RFA’s Lao service.
