New Zealand operates a national lottery through an autonomous Crown entity, Lotto New Zealand. Lottery profits are distributed by the Lottery Grants Board to charities and community organizations. In addition to the Lotto, the country’s other nationwide lotteries include Keno, Bullseye and Instant Kiwi scratch card games.

The first known lottery was created in ancient China around 2,000 years ago, but they were banned in the 15th century due to their association with religious ceremonies. Lotteries reappeared in the 17th century, when the French began conducting public city lotteries and private ones for wealthy individuals. By the 19th century, there were more than 20 national and international lotteries in operation.

In the United States, lotteries are legal and regulated by state laws. Some of these lotteries are operated by state-licensed organizations, while others are operated by private corporations. In both cases, the prizes are tax-deductible. The top prize is often given as a lump sum, but some states require the winners to take it over 30 years.
