The lottery is also a popular source of revenue for public education systems.
New Zealand operates a public national lottery called Lotto, which was established in 1987. The Lottery Commission of New Zealand is an autonomous Crown entity and is a not-for-profit organization, with profits distributed by the Lottery Grants Board to charities, community groups and sport and recreation organisations. In addition to the Lotto, New Zealand has a series of other lottery games including Keno, Bullseye and Instant Kiwi scratch cards.
A Laos caller told RFA’s Lao Service that he hopes the government will resume control of the national lottery “because private business interests should not be responsible for running it.” He said that he doesn’t know how much these businesses pay the government for the annual cost of the lottery concession, and he added that there is no accountability. He also said that the public is not informed about how the drawings are conducted.
