Thai Lotto is one of the most beloved forms of gambling in Thailand, drawing twice monthly and played by more than 19 million Thais or 28.6% of its population. A popular street vendor can often be seen carrying around brown wooden boxes containing lottery tickets secured to his bicycle; though chances of winning may be slim, many Thais find themselves drawn in by chance and give it a go anyway!
In cultures where fate, faith and imagination play key roles, the lottery is more than simply another form of entertainment; it serves as a ritualized way of life that intertwines religion, politics and economics. Dream numbers, Buddha statue symbols or even animal behavior may provide signs pointing toward future prosperity – this serves as the inspiration behind choosing lottery numbers for an individual’s selection process.
Thais use various approaches to selecting lottery numbers, from looking out for signs from the universe in everyday events to consulting an elderly family member for advice. A trip to a temple with a holy water basin known as Sawang Arom may also help bring luck. A popular method is Esiimsi – shaking a cup marked with numbers until one drops out; this number then becomes the winner’s number.
Apart from traditional methods of playing the Thai Lotto, online lotto gambling can also be found. While odds of winning remain small, its convenience and ability to place orders with credit cards makes this form of lotto betting attractive to some people. Note that purchasing lotto tickets are subject to tax in Thailand so be prepared when going to claim your prize that your passport or ID will need to be presented when collecting them.
