In this talk, Dr Charles Zuckerman will explore the mechanics of lotteries in Laos since 1975, and consider how they might shed light on state enterprises generally. He will trace their political, economic and moral history, as well as the rationalization of the lottery as an economic activity coherent with socialist goals. He will also discuss his ethnographic research on the phenomenon in Luang Prabang between 2013 and 2016.
