The private sector has also developed games of chance such as instant scratch-off tickets and keno. Many of these games have been developed through the use of computer technology.
A number of countries have legalized state-run lotteries. Some of these include China, South Korea and Japan. Most of these lotteries have their own websites where they publish results and provide other information. Some of these sites offer the possibility to purchase lottery tickets online, despite the fact that gambling laws in these countries prohibit this practice.
In Canada, the interprovincial Lottery Corporation operates four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, and Daily Grand. It also operates a small number of regional lotteries. These are operated by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta).
The Lao government has stepped in to take control of its legal state lottery, which has been rigged by officials with connections to the ruling elite, sources told RFA’s Lao Service. The state has asked the ministry to reduce the number of drawings from two a week to one and to handle winnings in a more transparent manner. The ministry also ordered that informal football lotteries and lottery chances purchased via short messaging service be shut down.
