Lotteries are games of chance in which people have a chance to win a prize based on a random drawing. They are a popular form of gambling and can be found in many countries around the world. The prizes are often cash or goods. Some are small, but others can be large sums of money. There are a variety of rules and regulations for conducting lotteries. Some are run by state or local governments, while others are conducted by private organizations or businesses.
In addition to state-run lotteries, there are also independent operators that sell instant lottery games on the Internet. These games are similar to keno and video lottery terminals, but offer a greater variety of game options and allow players to participate in multiple draws. GTech Corporation, a company headquartered in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, administers 70% of worldwide online and instant lottery games.
The New Zealand Lottery is a nationwide game with four games: the Lotto (including Powerball), Keno, Bullseye and the Instant Kiwi scratch card game. The total prize pool for all games is NZ$5 billion. Lottery profits are redirected by the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board to charities and community groups, including Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Creative New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Commission.
While some lottery winners have a desire to keep their winnings private, the majority of them are more than happy to share. In fact, some lottery winners are willing to go so far as to publicly announce their winnings – even to the world’s media. But for most, winning the lottery is a great way to get some extra cash and help out a family member or friend in need.
Among the most well-known lottery winners are two men from Portland, Oregon who won the Powerball jackpot in January. One of them, Forty-six-year-old Cheng Saephan, is giving half of his prize to a friend. The other, Duanpen, plans to use some of the money for medical bills. Both are members of the Iu Mien, a Vietnamese refugee group that settled in Portland in the 1970s. They have established a community that includes a Buddhist temple, a Baptist church, social organizations, businesses and restaurants. The Oregon Lottery has a policy of not revealing the identities of lottery winners.
