Sources in Laos say officials in the communist country rig the national lottery system to avoid large pay-outs. Drawings often show numbers that vanish from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be chosen, a source told RFA’s Lao Service.
The sources spoke on condition of anonymity. They said business interests with a stake in the national lottery include family members of top government officials. They added that the companies do not disclose how much they pay the government annually for their concession to operate the lottery and that no one inspects their work. They called for the government to resume control of the lottery.
