Laotian Immigrants Win Millions in Oregon Lottery
A couple from the Laotian city of Savannakhet has won hundreds of millions of dollars in a lottery drawing held by the state of Oregon. Forty-six-year-old Cheng Saephan and his wife, Duanpen, will split the prize of over 1.3 billion dollars. The winners will be able to choose between receiving the money over 30 years or in a lump sum.
But there are concerns that state lottery officials are rigging the system. Several numbers appear on lottery tickets only to disappear during the drawing, a source told RFA’s Lao Service. In one case, the number 09 appeared only as a five on purchased tickets throughout the day of the Oct. 14 drawing. But 10 minutes before the drawing, the number changed to 662. The change was made without explanation.
