The New Zealand national lottery is controlled by the government through an autonomous Crown entity, Lotto New Zealand. Profits from the lottery are distributed by the Lottery Grants Board to various charitable and community organizations across New Zealand. In addition, the government uses a portion of profits for sports and recreation, cultural activities, and film development.
There are four nationwide lotteries in Canada: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. The provinces and territories are responsible for operating the lotteries through their respective provincial lottery commissions: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and British Columbia).
In Spain, the state-owned Organizació Nacional del Juego (ONJ) manages public lotteries. It also operates the country’s largest pan-European lottery, EuroMillions, which was launched in 2004 and has a top prize of EUR2.4 billion. The ONJ also runs the national keno lottery, El Gordo, and a series of regional lotteries that each offer small prizes. The ONJ is a member of the Association of International Lotteries. In addition, private lotteries operate throughout Europe, including the UK-based EuroMillions UK, France-based La Française du Loto, and Greece-based Keno. These are often run by family businesses with close ties to the government.
