Sources in the communist nation say that officials manipulate winning numbers and rig the results of the national lottery, which is held three times each week. Drawings for the lotto have been known to show numbers that disappear from purchased tickets, or change from a number to another when a ticket is sold. On Oct. 14, the number 509 disappeared from all purchases of tickets that day, but then reappeared 10 minutes before the drawing was to take place, a source told RFA’s Lao Service.
