Lotteries are games of chance wherein players try to win a prize by matching numbers or symbols on a drawn ticket. These games are regulated at the federal and state level, and some are operated by private companies. In the United States, lottery revenue has historically been used for education, health, and public safety.

In Canada, the government operates four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. The winnings of these lotteries are distributed by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, which is a consortium of five provincial and territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Québec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut).

Some governments restrict the distribution of lottery funds to charities or community groups while others distribute it more broadly. In the US, proceeds from lotteries are usually deposited into a special fund that is used for public benefit purposes, such as providing low-income families with education and health services. A number of states also have charitable lotteries, where the proceeds are given to organizations such as universities and hospitals.

Many people in developing countries depend on the sales of lottery tickets to make ends meet. In Vietnam, for example, lottery sales are the only source of income for poor people. In these situations, the social security systems are not yet able to handle the large number of needy citizens and so lottery sellers are a vital economic force. For Huong, a single mother and lottery seller from Saigon, selling tickets is her only means of survival. On good days she can sell up to 250 tickets a day, earning a profit of about 11 US-Dollars.

The lottery industry has experienced substantial growth in recent years, due primarily to the increase in the popularity of instant games and the growing use of mobile devices. This trend is expected to continue as more and more consumers become comfortable using online and mobile devices for purchasing lottery products. The growing popularity of the instant game has also stimulated innovation in the lottery sector, with new types of games being introduced all the time.

In addition to traditional instant games, some states have introduced keno and video lottery terminals (VLTs) to increase revenues from lotteries. These machines are similar to slot machines and offer a variety of different games, including the instant game. In the United States, some VLTs are connected to the Internet and allow players to play from any location with an internet connection. In addition, some state-run lotteries have begun to offer a number of e-commerce initiatives that enable players to purchase their tickets from the comfort of home.
