Lotteries are a form of gambling in which numbers are drawn to determine winners of prizes. The prize money can be cash or goods. In addition, a number of lotteries have charitable purposes, such as raising funds for research and medical care. In some countries, governments regulate the operation of state and provincial lotteries. However, private lottery operators are also common. Some states have laws against online gambling. Regardless of their legality, lottery games are popular among Internet users. Many companies offer online lottery-style games for free or at a small fee. In addition to traditional lottery games, some companies sell tickets and provide services related to the game, such as ticket scanning.

In the communist nation of Laos, lottery officials are rigging the system to avoid large pay-outs. The winning number 509 for the Oct. 14 lottery drawing mysteriously disappeared from purchased tickets, a source told RFA’s Lao Service. The number was associated with the buffalo, a symbol of good luck in Laos. But the radio broadcast of the drawing only mentioned 134 as the winning number. It changed to 662 only 10 minutes before the drawing.
