Lotteries are a type of gambling game where players are given a chance to win a prize by matching numbers or symbols on a ticket. In Australia, there are state-based lotteries as well as the Australian Lottery, which is operated by the Tatts Group. Other national games include Set for Life, Lucky Lotto, and the Health Lottery.

While lotteries are regulated in most countries, there are exceptions. In some countries, such as the United States, there are numerous illegal lottery games that operate without licenses or compliance with state law. These unlicensed operations, also referred to as illegitimate lottery activities, are often operated by organized crime groups or individuals seeking a fast way to make money.

Officials in the communist country of Laos are rigging the national lottery, manipulating the results to avoid large pay-outs, sources in the country tell RFA. During drawings, the winning numbers are frequently changed from those purchased by the public. In one example, the number 134 appeared on tickets sold throughout the day before the Oct. 14 drawing, but was later changed to 662. Lao authorities have not commented on the claims, but RFA’s sources say that business interests with close ties to the ruling elite are behind the manipulations.
