In the United States, there are numerous lottery websites that offer instant lottery games and other online gambling services. Despite these sites’ popularity, their legality is in question as many state gambling laws do not cover them. In addition, a number of the companies involved are outright frauds. GTech Corporation, for example, claims to administer 70% of worldwide lottery-style gaming. However, its business model is controversial: it charges premiums on base lottery prices and does not pay out winnings. Other lottery providers, such as Scientific Games and IGT, are able to operate legally in some jurisdictions, though they have not yet achieved the same level of market share as GTech.

In addition to the national lotteries, several private lotteries exist in the world. Some of these are organized by governments, while others are run as independent charities. The largest lottery is the EuroMillions, operated by Camelot Group. The prize pool of this lottery exceeds EUR2.4 billion per draw, making it the biggest in Europe. Other large lotteries include the Spanish Christmas Lottery, run by the state-owned Loterias y Apuestas del Estado.

The New Zealand Lottery is controlled by the Government through an autonomous Crown entity, Lotto New Zealand. Profits from the lottery are distributed to charities and community organizations through the Lottery Grants Board. The majority of Lottery New Zealand’s profits are allocated to sports and arts organisations, while the rest go to education and health.

A number of the major state-run lotteries in the United States have online versions, allowing players to purchase tickets and play from their home computers or mobile phones. These online versions can also be used to check past results, and some even allow players to select their own numbers. The New York Lottery, for instance, offers an online version called e-Lotto.

Lottery winners can claim their prizes within 180 days of the drawing date. In case of any disputes, the official files held by the state-run Louisiana Lottery shall be controlling.

Selling lottery tickets is a difficult and dangerous occupation for Huong, a single mother from Saigon, whose only source of income is this activity. She and her husband Manh spend 16 hours a day rushing around Saigon to sell their tickets. On good days, they can sell 250 tickets for a daily profit of about 11 US-Dollars. But on bad days, they can only manage 180 tickets. Their earnings barely provide enough for a daily meal.
