Lottery is a form of gambling that involves the drawing of numbers for a prize. It is generally considered to be a harmless pastime, but some people can become addicted to it. In Canada, the provincial/territorial lotteries operate the national games: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut), and the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (British Columbia). The Canadian federal Liberal government introduced a special law in 1967 to bring up to date a number of obsolete laws, including one that made buying a lottery ticket legal. The law was sponsored by Pierre Trudeau, then the minister of justice.
For many poor Vietnamese people, selling lottery tickets is their only source of income. They prefer it to the socially detested act of begging. On good days, Huong, a single mother of two young children, can sell about 200 lottery tickets a day. This is enough to provide for her family and to buy some extra food.
The prizes must be claimed within 180 days of the drawing date. Winners will be notified by the Maryland Lottery of their winning numbers through a telephone call or by mail. All prizes are subject to applicable taxes. Winners must be at least 18 years old to participate.
