In the early days of the modern lotteries, some prizes were actually goods or services, such as land and slaves. Benjamin Franklin held a series of lotteries to raise money for cannons to protect the city of Philadelphia. George Washington’s Mountain Road Lottery, which advertised slaves as the prize in The Virginia Gazette in 1768, was unsuccessful, but these rare tickets have become collectors’ items.
Some lottery winnings are taxable, while others are not. In some cases, a winner can hire an attorney to set up a blind trust for him or her so that the prize money is not disclosed and cannot be stolen or squandered by jealous family members or others. This arrangement is particularly effective in the case of multi-million dollar jackpots. Some winners choose to remain anonymous for a variety of reasons, including fear of being targeted by criminals and the desire to avoid publicity.
