Lottery is a form of gambling where people buy tickets for a chance to win a prize. Some governments outlaw it, while others endorse and regulate it. The state lottery commission in Laos oversees the country’s legal lotteries. The government has also enacted laws prohibiting the sale of illegal lotteries, and has a task force to deal with them. There are four nationwide lotteries in Canada, each operated by a provincial or territorial lottery corporation: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut). Each of these companies is owned by the government of its jurisdiction.

Lottery winners are required to claim their prizes within 180 days after the drawing. Prizes are paid in the form of a check, less any offsets or obligations.
