In the communist country of Laos, lottery officials are rigging the system to avoid large pay-outs, sources in the capital city of Vientiane tell RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings in the nation’s national lottery often display numbers that disappear from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be chosen. For example, the winning number of the Oct. 14 drawing was 509, which disappeared from the majority of tickets sold throughout the day, a source said.
The office of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive requesting that the ministry overseeing the state lottery work with other ministries to better manage the problem, an official told RFA’s Lao Service. The directive calls for the state lottery to reduce the number of drawings to one a week and to handle winnings in a more transparent manner. It also seeks to crack down on informal football and lottery chances bought by text messages or through short messaging services.
