They choose to sell tickets over the socially detested act of begging as it can give them a higher profit in the long run. On good days, a lottery ticket seller can make up to 230 000 VN-Dong (about 10 US-Dollars). This is the equivalent of a minimum wage in Vietnam.
In the United States, private lotteries have been around for centuries. They were originally illegal, but in the early 19th century became legal as state laws passed regulating them. Today, there are a variety of state-regulated lotteries in the US, including Powerball and Mega Millions, which have become some of the world’s most popular games.
There are also several independent online lotteries. They are not affiliated with the official government-sponsored lotteries, but still offer a chance to win cash prizes. Some of them are even available to players from other countries. The prizes in these lotteries are much smaller, but they can be a nice source of extra income.
Laos: Lao state officials rig the lottery, sources say
Lottery officials in the communist nation of Laos manipulate the drawing results to avoid large pay-outs, local sources tell RFA’s Lao Service. In recent weeks, the winning numbers in national drawings have mysteriously disappeared from purchased tickets or changed to numbers deemed unlucky. For example, the number 509 in a drawing held Oct. 14 appeared only as a five throughout the day, but then changed to 134 hours before the scheduled drawing.
The rigged lottery has raised concerns among many residents and fueled public discontent with the lottery system. One government official serving on the lottery committee said some changes have been made in response to questions about the legitimacy of the game, including cutting the drawings back to once a week.
Maryland: The state lottery encourages responsible play. Players must be at least 18 years old to play the games. Players should review the rules and regulations before playing any games, and only use money that they can afford to lose. In addition to these national lotteries, the country has several independent lottery operators such as Camelot and the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation.
