Officials in the communist country of Laos are allegedly rigging the national lottery to avoid large pay-outs. Drawings for the national lottery, held three times each week, often display numbers that either disappear from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be chosen, sources in Vientiane told RFA’s Lao Service. The lottery’s legal status in the country is a bit complicated: Gambling is illegal in Laos, but there are Special Economic Zones where it is permitted. Laos’s three land-based casinos feature roulette, blackjack and poker among other popular games.
